Facial injury repair

Careful repair of deep facial cuts to support the best possible healing.

If you have a fresh injury with heavy bleeding, a head injury or injury near the eye, go to the nearest hospital emergency department first.

Overview

The face heals well, but deep cuts deserve careful handling. Plastic surgical repair aligns each layer of tissue precisely and uses fine sutures, which helps the wound heal neatly and reduces the risk of a prominent scar.

This may be relevant if…

  • A deep cut to the face, lip, eyelid or ear
  • Wounds with irregular edges or tissue loss
  • Concern about how a facial wound will scar

At your consultation

  • Checking the depth of the wound and any injury to nerves, glands or underlying structures
  • Cleaning and planning the repair to follow the natural lines of the face where possible

How it is done

The wound is repaired in layers under anaesthesia using fine sutures.

You will be given wound care and scar care advice for healing at home.

Risks, recovery & limits

  • Every wound leaves some scar; careful repair and aftercare aim to make it as inconspicuous as possible.
  • Scars mature over many months; further scar treatment can be considered if needed.
  • Risks include infection, wound separation and thickened scarring.

Other options

  • Simple closure methods for small, superficial wounds
